Courses Designed and Currently Taught
Internship in Visual Arts
Students in the B.A. in Art with Graphic Design and Digital Arts concentrations and in the Art History Minor apply skills acquired through academic study by working at an agency or institution through an agreement originated by the UNG Department of Visual Arts and the Office of Career Services. To earn credit, students submit weekly documentation of progress, an employer evaluation, and a final portfolio upon completion. [UNG ART 4850 - capstone]
Art History Undergraduate Research
Currently offered as an independent study by special request, this course provides students the opportunity to conduct research on an art history topic of their choice, with the goal of producing an undergraduate-level scholarly research paper during the long semester or summer. Students meet regularly with the supervising faculty member/s to report their progress and submit a polished paper to complete the course. Enrolled students are asked to make a commitment to present a shortened version of their paper at the spring semester UNG Annual Research Conference. [UNG 4905 - independent study]
Mexican and U.S. Latino/a Art
A history of Mexican and Mexican American art. Topics include Mesoamerican art, art created in the Viceroyalty of New Spain, Mexican art after independence, the Mexican mural movement, Magic Realism, the Ruptura generation, contemporary Mexican art, the origins and development of Chicano art, and contemporary U.S. Latino/a art. Topics are studied as part of their historical and cultural contexts. [UNG ART 3570 - upper-level]
Topics in Latin American and Latinx Art
Selected art exhibitions from Latin America and U.S. Latino/a minorities are studied as part of social, political, and cultural contexts. Topics include painting, sculpture, photography, video, installations, performance, and digital media from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Uruguay. Approaches to the study of Latin American and Latino/a art are discussed. [UNG ART 4590/4591 - upper-level]
Pop Art
A study of the historical development of Pop art from its origins in Great Britain in the late 1950s, through its heyday in the U.S. in the 1960s and 70s, as well as the present-day international expressions called Late Pop, Post-Pop, and Neo-Pop. Discussions include international artists, women artists, Black artists, and Hispanic artists. Visual culture of the 1960s and Pop-related artistic expressions, such as psychedelic art, album covers, Pop-era graphic design, advertising, and fashion are also explored. Modern Art History
A study of European art regarded as Modern from 1850 to 1945, with a focus on the historical avant-garde movements and their relationship to modern culture and society, to other contemporary artistic styles, and to the art of the past. [UNG ART 3550 - upper-level]
History of Graphic Design
A history of graphic design and typography from antiquity to the present. The invention of writing, the manuscript, the graphic renaissance in Europe, the industrial age, the modernist era, the information age and the digital revolution are explored. [UNG ART 3503 - upper-level]
Visual Literacy and Communication
A study of visual forms as tools for communication. Through image analysis and context research, participants discuss problems such as: how art objects and forms acquire value; how meaning is communicated through visual and historical references; the role of artistic intention and chance in the creative process; audience theory; the social perception of historical artists, academic artists, avant-garde artists, commercial artists, craft artists, digital artists, women artists, and minority artists. Introduction to Art History II
A survey of European art and architecture from the Renaissance to the present day, emphasizing artistic changes over time in response to changing social and historical contexts. Students develop solid image analysis skills, research skills through secondary sources, and approaches to the study of art. [UNG ART 2520 - Lower-level for majors and General Education]
Art Appreciation
A course fostering an awareness and appreciation for the visual arts. Students build vocabulary that allows for the analysis of art objects and gain awareness about the influence of art on culture, politics, history, religion, and science. [eCore ARTS 1100 - General Education]
